As a make-up artist, I have many lipsticks in my kit but it is not practical to take every colour with me on small jobs. As a result, I’ve learned how to minimise what it so this can work for you too.

Lipstick is an essential makeup step that we often miss out but a pop of colour on your lips can instantly add glamour to any look. So, you don’t need 20 lipsticks, follow my suggestions and you will find out the top 5 lipstick colours you will ever need.

I have named two branded lipsticks that work for everyone. However, the others you can choose based on your skin tone and undertone and just by trying them on and having fun with colour!!

We are all attracted to a gorgeous, shiny new lipstick but the truth is that the average woman rarely gets to the end of a lipstick. So, I would suggest you buy 5 lipstick colours which suit your skin tone and undertone.

It is much better to have five you love and that look great on you, that way you’ll have less clutter in your bag and less expense. You could also mix them with the nude to soften the colour or add a gloss to make them more moisturising.

Finally, choose bright, rich colours that give your face a great lift. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of trying them on.

Here are the top 5 lipstick colours you need in your makeup bag:

1. Red:

Blue-toned reds look great on everyone and the best one I have found is ‘Ruby Woo’ by MAC. It is a classic matte red that looks fabulous on every skin tone, it’s not too drying for your lips yet it stays on which in our busy lifestyles that’s exactly what we need!!

If you find the colour is too strong for you, just apply a little and blend it out with your brush or finger. You could also mix it with your nude lipstick to lighten it.

2. Pink:

The best everyday pink out there right now is Pillow Talk by Charlotte Tilbury which comes in 3 shades to suit all skin tones with matching liners and shadows.

3. Orange:

Oranges or corals are lovely especially this time of year to show off your sun kissed glowing skin. For fair skin you can try bright corals and for darker skins go for more deeper orange tones. If you are still unsure about wearing orange try an orange gloss or lip balm for a softer look.

4. Brown:

A good brown will go with most outfits and is perfect if you’re wearing a strong eye look. Go for something natural and again you can mix it with your reds/pinks etc for an extra twist.

5. Nude:

Try a nude lip liner all over the lips with a slightly lighter, glossy nude in the centre; this makes your lips appear bigger!!

Other Tips:

In this section, I’m going to give you some extra tips that may help you find lipstick application easier and also more affective.

Firstly, always use a lip liner to help define your lips.

Secondly, use the liner all over your lips to make the colour stronger.

Thirdly, use a different colour liner to create a new shade for example, a red liner with a brown lipstick.

Lastly, you can use lip liners all over the lips as a base. That way, they will give your lipstick something to stick to and therefore, help the lipstick stay on longer.

If you’ve got big lips then show them off!! They are the trend right now, if your lips are small overdraw them slightly at the cupids bow and wear a lighter gloss in the centre.

Avoid really pale colours as they can make you look washed out.

Avoid really dark colours as they can make your lips look smaller.

When you find your top 5 lipstick colours, but a spare set because cosmetic companies are constantly changing their products every couple of years. As a result, you may find it difficult to find the same ones again.

Remember, have fun with your makeup, get mixing those colours so you’ll use them up and won’t waste them. Be creative, try a lipstick as a cream blush!! Have fun xx
